Google SERP preview and the character counters

What it is

The Google SERP preview is a live mock-up of how your result looks in Google, drawn from the SEO title, the URL/slug and the meta description as you edit them. Alongside it, each editable field has a length meter — a colour bar with a hint — that counts characters (and words where relevant) in real time and turns green / amber / red as you approach or exceed the recommended lengths. Together they let you write title and description that read well and fit, before you ever save.

Where to find it

The preview and counters live inside the AISA SEO UI in the editor: in the Standalone SEO block ("AI SEO Assistant — SEO") as the "Google preview" area with the title/url/description lines, and as meters under the keyphrase, title and meta description fields. The same length feedback drives generation so AI output already aims at the right lengths.

Requirements & tier

  • Available wherever the AISA SEO fields render in the editor (standalone block). No AI call is needed — the preview and counters are computed locally in the browser.
  • No special tier is required to see the preview and counters.

How to use

  1. Open a post/page with the AISA SEO block.
  2. Type or generate the SEO title; watch the title meter and the preview's first line update.
  3. Edit the slug; the preview's URL line reflects it.
  4. Write the meta description; the description meter shows characters and the preview's snippet updates.
  5. Aim for green on both meters — the baseline targets are title ≤ 60 characters and meta description ≤ 155 characters.
  6. If a variable pill is in the field, the preview renders the real value (site name, year, excerpt…) so the length you see is the length Google sees.

Questions people ask

  • What do the colours mean? Green = within the recommended length, amber = borderline, red = too long/short. The hint text next to the bar explains the state.
  • What lengths is AISA targeting? The on-page baseline is title up to ~60 characters and meta description up to ~155 characters, with the keyphrase near the start of the title and in the first sentence of the description.
  • Does the counter measure pixels or characters? It counts characters (and words where useful); the goal is a practical, readable length rather than a pixel-perfect render.
  • Will variables inflate the count? No — the preview substitutes the real value of each pill, so the count reflects the final rendered text.
  • Does generating cost anything just to preview? No. The preview and counters are local; only pressing Generate calls the AI.

Troubleshooting

  • Preview not updating. Make sure you're editing inside the AISA field; click into the title or description box and type.
  • Counter stays red. Trim the text toward the target length; if a long variable is the cause, consider a shorter one.
  • Preview shows a token like %%sitename%%. That's a pill; AISA substitutes the real value in the rendered preview — if it stays raw, re-insert the variable as a pill rather than typing the token by hand.
